An unexpected outcome occurred this weekend when Now You See Me dashed into theaters. It gave a small preview of what would happen this weekend when afternoon and evening sneaks hit screens last weekend and it scored more than $150,000. Now You See Me dominated the competition with its flashy tricks and captured people's attention with the premise. Reviews are glowing with many users giving the film high marks. Its opening weekend of $1,235,000 is the 3rd biggest OW of the year behind Iron Man 3 and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. 2m will happen before Man of Steel opens.

The Hangover 3 could not escape Now You See Me's spell and dove 59%. WOM is decent but definitely not to the level of the first 2 films. Admissions have been steadily moving away from After Earth with it nursing almost a 3,000 lead over After Earth on Saturday. Despite kicking After Earth down, its shot at beating Hangover 2's total is in serious trouble and it needs a great hold next week to get back on track. That looks unlikely with World War Z pounding its way on Wednesday and Man of Steel the week after. It looks like it will get curtailed with only a 1.5m finish.

After Earth crash landed on its 2nd weekend and fell behind Hangover 3. Reviews have been horrid with scores coming down quickly. It is the 2nd worst reviewed movie of the top 10 this week. With World War Z targeting its main demographic beginning on Wednesday, After Earth will be put out of its misery soon with 1.4m accumulated from HK.

Switch got entangled by the rest of the field and negative reviews swamped the movie into a 'must miss' scenario. It is the worst received film of the top 10 with an incorrigible 1.1 user rating. Its opening day was its best day as it claimed $50,000 but the abhorrent reviews have killed its chances of making a comeback. Admissions this weekend haven't even come close to its holiday admissions and theaters won't be feeling any remorse from the lack of business and will take it off the schedules soon. Switch will have trouble making $400,000 with big movies coming out the next couple of weeks.

Fast & Furious 6 fought with So Young for 5th and was victorious by winning with huge leads on Saturday and Sunday. It broke through the 3m milestone after 4 weeks as it drove away with $87,000. Its week to week hold was a slippery 64% though so its run is coming to an abrupt end. World War Z is unraveled on Wednesday but it should be able to get to 3.1m before leaving theaters.

Below the top 5, So Young could not achieve a top 5 showing and had to settle for 6th even though it had 2 weekends of sneaks. It grossed an estimated $85,000 including sneaks. Its average WOM won't be endearing itself to uninterested audiences shunning Mainland movies so it looks like the romantic comedy will have to live with it being a hit in only China. So Young might not even get to $200,000.

Pee Mak Phra Khanong played well in its 5th weekend, scaring up another $62,000 (-41%) for an estimated $1,215,000. It is awfully close to $10m HK and it should be able to get there unless if it drops like a rock when World War Z opens.

American Dreams in China was heavily affected by the new openers this week but it still took in $58,500 (-44%). It has past the half a million benchmark and it is already up to $513,500 in 3 weeks.

South Korean film Miracle in Cell No. 7 opened to little fanfare and debuted in 9th with an estimated $46,000 for the 4-day and $54,000 including previews. WOM is excellent with over 90% rating. Saturday admissions nearly doubled its Friday's and Sunday is nearly as strong as Saturday which suggests that people are turning toward the film. I think this will get to $130,000 with the great WOM but we'll need to see its performance next week to evaluate its chances of grossing anything further.

The Great Gatsby rounded out the top 10 with an estimated $35,000 (-53%) and clipped past $1.3m.
