Under fire from Pacific Rim, Monsters University managed to chase Pacific Rim from the #1 spot with $348,038 on its 2nd Thursday. It overcome its big opening day and huge competition to score a hold under 50%. Word of mouth is really good, not as overwhelmingly positive as Wreck-It Ralph or Toy Story 3 but there's a lot of support for the Pixar prequel. Another piece of good news to report is that it becomes the 2nd highest grossing animation in just 8 days, passing Kung Fu Panda 2. Monsters University is headed for 2-2.1m this weekend. It will make more than Harry Potter 7-2 and Transformers 3's 2nd weekends but it should be behind Avatar, Iron Man 3, Toy Story 3 and The Avengers for 2nd weekend grosses. It should be able to nab the 5th highest 2nd weekend gross above The Dark Knight Rises. Monsters University's on its way to 10m at least but how it performs when The Smurfs 2 opens will determine where it ends up on the top 10 all time list.

Pacific Rim had some advantages over Monsters University coming into this weekend including a supersized IMAX ticket price charge and an additional blockbuster charge in regular theaters but even those could not frighten the scary toon. It still got off to a good start with no bankable stars in the film and it being an original. It is looking at a weekend of 1.7-1.8m. A final total of about 4.1m is in the works with good WOM swarming around. It'll get knocked down by The Wolverine next week but it will still have IMAX and a screen to gather a respectable hold.

Despicable Me 2 held down the fort for another week, grossing $61,873 on its 3rd Thursday. It's been a surprising run for the Universal animated picture. In a market dominated by Pixar and not by the Despicable Me franchise, this is a great run. It has already doubled the first film and it could end up in the vicinity of Shrek Forever After. It will need to have one last push come The Smurfs 2. That will dominate the market with the family and couples crowds. Despicable Me 2 could get to 3.5m.

Turbo moved at a snail's pace and got off to a slow start in 4th. It continued the string of hit-disappointment alternating films that began with Megamind in 2010. Since then, Dreamworks have caught fire with Kung Fu Panda 2, The Croods and Madagascar 3 but have cooled down with Puss in Boots, Rise of the Guardians and Megamind disappointing. Turbo is the next one to be added to the disappointment list. The market is saturated with 3 Hollywood animated films and especially the 2 in the top 3 so there was not really a place for Turbo. Turbo's schedule does not get any easier because Doraemon is knocking on the door next weekend and then The Smurfs 2 will annihilate all animation films in 2 weeks.

Tales from the Dark Part 1 could not escape the empty theaters and screens from last weekend and dove 66% on its 2nd Thursday. Much of its terrible hold can be attributed to the frontloaded opening day and Broadway/AMC leaving its biggest screen with it. It will fall quickly in the next few weeks. 1m might not even be reached. It depends on how far EDKO wants to push their film.

Blind Detective spun around and landed in 6th place on its 3rd Thursday. Rebounding from an all time low with Switch, Blind Detective has turned around Andy Lau's fortunes and kept the box office golden couple streak alive. It'll end with 1.9m.

World War Z continued its trek through HK and saw its 5th Thursday slow down 64%. It has already taken in a spectacular 5.4m and it will make it to 5.5m before leaving theaters.

Pedro Almodóvar's I'm So Excited got off to a good beginning with $9,409 on opening day. Its alternative storyline and arthouse feel brought in the cinephiles. This did not just play well at only Cinematheque as so many arthouse films have done in the past but all 5 theaters it was released in showed strength. $50,000 is a good target for this weekend.

Man of Steel has not been holding well. WOM has been somewhat negative so it is no surprise then that the holds have not been great. It is looking to finish 4.285m.

Now You See Me passed the 3.5m with $5,542 from 15 showtimes. It's a wonderful total for the heist flick. 3.56m is its goal.
