It's interesting to see how theaters divvied up screens this week. The Smurfs 2 will occupy most of the biggest screens in the morning and afternoon but at night, it will have a weaker presence. Most theaters are not giving The Smurfs 2 night time shows whereas R.I.P.D. will be getting the opposite. Early pre-sales do not look encouraging for the blue creatures. It does not look like it will make 1m this week.

R.I.P.D. is the other major wide release this week. It held special previews last weekend that did not do much. Many places were fairly empty and WOM coming out does not look promising. Thursday pre-sales look bare and $300,000 might not happen this weekend even with previews and 3D prices. Marketing has not been great and the trailer did not get a good reaction the past several weeks.

The Rooftop is Jay Chou's 2nd directorial film. Most of Jay Chou's fans will bombard theaters on Thursday to catch him on opening day and the film will be very frontloaded. It will get a semi-wide to wide release.

Secretly Greatly, one of 2013's biggest hits in Korea, enters HK theaters this week. It did open with sneaks last week and reception has been very good. This could definitely be another sleep hit a la Miracle in Cell No. 7.

Mood Indigo is the last opener for this week. The 2 usual arthouse suspects plus The Grand will be showing this with 4-5 showings a piece. It should play very well at Cinematheque.

Holdover Hentai Kamen: Forbidden Super Hero opened with a mammoth gross last week to the tune of $55,000 including sneaks. Both Langham and Telford are keeping this for another week with half-full day showtimes. $100,000 should happen by the end of next Wednesday.

Disconnect opened relatively well last weekend and theaters are giving this half day showtimes this week with the exception of Cinematheque.

Tiny Times saw a tiny gross although it did see an uptick on Sunday. Mainland tourists, however, might be entranced by Jay Chou's newest movie so I do not see this holding very well.

Super saturated release, The Wolverine heads into its 2nd weekend as the biggest X-Men opening grosser of all time and now it looks to scratch 2m this weekend. Theaters are being quite generous and have given it the biggest or 2nd biggest screens all day. Its WOM is incredibly strong with the best rating of all the wide releases. Pre-sales don't look that bad either.

Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum laughed to $190,000 last weekend in its biggest opening weekend in 5 years. Theaters are skeptical of Doraemon's staying power with The Smurfs 2 and Doraemon's track record of being very frontloaded on opening weekend. $300,000 should be passed but $400,000 will depend on how well it survives this weekend.

SDU: Sex Duties Unit got off to a bumpy start last week, coming in below Vulgaria's opening weekend without previews. Though it will make 1.5m, 2m is looking less and less likely with the screen count this weekend.

Pacific Rim is encountering some problems this weekend. Many theaters are showing The Smurfs 2 and R.I.P.D. along with The Wolverine and SDU: Sex Duties Unit so it leaves theaters with a dilemma. Those 4 will take up 4 screens and the 1 or 2 remaining screens will go to the best performers. For UA and MCL, this is not an issue but at Broadway/AMC, some theaters have stripped nearly all of its showtimes or even cut it completely from their schedule. With screen loss over 50% at Broadway/AMC, it is not conducive to a good hold. 4m might still happen but it will need to outperform at least 2 out of the 4 occupying 1 screen each this week which might be doable. It will approach this weekend and 4m is still very much in its future.

Monsters University held up OK in its 3rd weekend and theaters have given it half-full day showtimes. In some theaters, Monsters University has been so far ahead of everybody else in pre-sales that it has gotten the biggest screen for the 4th straight week. UA is in a nicer mood this week because half of its theaters have returned a 7 PM showtime to Monsters University. Those that did not have cut only 1 of MU's showtimes. Broadway/AMC is still its biggest supporter though and MCL is going with a half-full day lineup. 9m will come this weekend with 10m on the horizon.

Despicable Me 2 has enjoyed strong holds week after week. Over at Broadway/AMC, they are its theater-based distributor, therefore, it will be getting half-full day showtimes at most theaters. 4m will depend on this weekend and whether or not The Smurfs 2 will grab its audience.
